The Hidden Door Artists’ Co-Operative Gallery

The Okanagan Art Gallery is a small and earnest business located in Osoyoos, B.C. and comprised of over two dozen south Okanagan artists.  The gallery began a number of years ago as the Oliver Art Gallery in the town of Oliver.  After several years, members took the opportunity to move to Osoyoos. The gallery today comprises a large 2100 sq ft floor area with six rooms, each having its own skylight providing natural light on the artwork. Membership in the gallery is restricted to residents of the south Okanagan/Boundary/Similkameen area and applicants are subject to a jurying process ensuring a consistently high standard of work. Each artist has a dedicated wall space featuring a self portrait in the artist’s style. The gallery is active in the community, participating in art exhibitions, offering workshops, giving charitable donations and hosting special talks. The first Saturday of each month is an open house evening at the gallery.

The story begins with a young student at the Vancouver School of Art in the late 1950s and follows his career as a sign painter, a designer of architectural interiors for retail stores, shopping malls, cruise ships, and our own fleet of BC Ferries, culminating with the paintings he is best known for today. If you have ever lived or spent any time in the lower mainland over the past 60 years, you have most likely been impacted in some regard by Dale’s commercial work. More recently if you have attended any group exhibitions here in the Okanagan over the years, you have most certainly communed with his paintings.

This exhibition hopes to highlight the breadth of the journey travelled, illustrating the totality of a lifetime’s pursuit and commitment to a singular passion for self expression and creativity. I would like to thank Dale for his trust and willingness to share his story. I hope you enjoy discovering the arc of his career as much as I have. Dale Matthews lives and works out of his studio overlooking Trout Creek.

Permanent Collection in Summerland

In 2018 Dale Matthew’s painting titled Orchard Ladders became part of the Summerland Art Gallery permanent collection. This particular piece is striking in both the subject and its tonality and at the same time pulls on the heart strings as it was a familiar sight for locals to see ladders stacked against lovely old wooden barns. While ladders are now replaced mostly by aluminum versions from Rona – Dale manages to preserve Summerland’s history in his stunning works of art.

Dale also teaches workshops at the Summerland Art Gallery and is open to teaching more in the future.

FCA – Landscapes Show May 22 2019

A blazing horizon at dawn or dusk, lush foliage in the summer and a serene blanket of white in winter – landscapes take many forms with the passing of time. Artists divided by country, culture or decade are united in their love for and unique expression of their favourite landscape.
